RACE & SHINE
A Charity Run to help others help themselves

“Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”  – Chinese Proverb

Let It Shine Foundation invites everyone to help create opportunities for adults with autism by joining its RACE & SHINE charity run event on Saturday, November 21, 2009 at Fort Bonifacio.

Money that will be raised from this event will fund research for a specific purpose: that of providing vocational training and other work opportunities for adults with autism, such as supporting the creation of programs for small and medium sized companies to employ individuals with autism.

Most meaningful provisions for individuals with autism end upon leaving school, but the Let It Shine Foundation hopes to change this by developing vocational programs that give individuals with autism equal opportunities to work.

Support will go both ways – not only will there be skills therapy programs for the adult with autism, training and assistance can also be given to business owners who want to determine how they can create these work opportunities.

The race itself will have four distances – 3, 5, 10, and 15km plus a special 3km relay best suited for beginners and families. Children as young as seven years old can participate. Individuals with Autism are also encouraged to join the event!

Registration can be made at R.O.X. (Recreational Outdoor eXchange) at Bonifacio High Street  (NOVEMBER 12-19, 2009)  and ongoing now at ALL TERRA, Club 650 along Libis (near Eastwood) until November 18.  Registration Fee is  Php500.00 per runner.

Major sponsors NIKE PARK and MASSAGE BY US will be giving away prizes for the winners of the race. Prizes will also be provided by PLANET SPORTS, THE ATHLETE’s FOOT, TOBY’s, RUNNR, CPK, and CEBU PACIFIC. VITWATER will be the official drink of Race & Shine. This event is also brought to you by LBC, IPANEMA, RIDER, PAK PRIME and ORIENT FREIGHT.

Let It Shine Foundation was established in 1998 and is a non-profit organization dedicated to raising funds for programs to help individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders. For additional information, please contact the foundation at 218-2362 or  0920-9244282 or email shine.foundation@gmail.com

Race and Shine

Nowadays, runners choose the races they will participate in almost always by checking on these factors: venue/route, race organizer, registration fee, singlet quality and/or design and the prestige that comes with running (and finishing) the said race.

Running a race and finishing it with as little hassle as possible definitely gives one a certain high. Also, what more can one ask for if at the end of the race, an icing on the cake is given in the form of a PR, a finisher’s shirt or certificate or both, various freebies and the now almost common loot bag. It’s just like joining a party with a running race as a theme!

There are, on the other hand, a number of runners who also include in their tool to choose, the information about the race’s cause or beneficiary. These races are those whose primary purpose is to be able to raise funds for their advocacy.

One such race is Race and Shine. I have been fortunate enough to be briefed via email by Ms. Rhea Joaquin-Primavera of Let It Shine Foundation about their group, what they do and also the details of the said race. As I post the full transcript of her email, I am hoping that upon reading it, you folks might consider joining this race and help the group achieve their goal. It will definitely put a smile on many beneficiaries’ faces. :)

Hi Vimz!

I represent the LET IT SHINE FOUNDATION, a non-profit organization dedicated to raising funds for individuals diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Individuals with autism vary widely in abilities, intelligence and behaviors. Although most of them require some form of assistance or supervision throughout their lives, some interventions have made it possible for others to develop the skills they need to live independent lives, including the opportunity to work. Our foundation would like to support this initiative and is hosting its very first charity run called: RACE AND SHINE on NOVEMBER 21, 2009 (Sat) @ the FORT.

THE ADVOCACY
Endorsed by the Autism Society of the Philippines,  Let it Shine Foundation is  one of the few groups setting up research for the creation and sustainability of VOCATIONAL PROGRAMS for individuals with autism to provide them the equal opportunity to work and earn.  A research team has been created to evaluate which jobs are best suitable for individuals with autism. This research will hopefully lead to the creation of a variety of therapy programs that will develop the skills necessary for them to work independently.  information from this research will be shared to all schools and centers that cater to individuals with Autism. Funds raised from the race shall also be used to establish awareness campaigns and support the creation of programs for small and medium sized businesses to employ individuals with Autism. This will include providing training programs for any business owner and assistance to determine how their businesses can create these work opportunities.
