Gear Review: Sony Walkman Sports W Series Waterproof

Note: This is not a paid review but the gear was provided by Ogilvy for the said purpose. Now for my feedback…

People nowadays have been  more into an active lifestyle, engaging into sports not only for leisure but also for health reasons. Owing to the rigors of maintaining an active lifestyle, music become a staple not only during training but also in races as well.  Thus there a lot of available music players in the market that caters to such requirements.

The Sony Walkman Sports W Series is one such product – made for active people, people who are always on the go. I have been fortunate enough to be provided a sample for purposes of sharing my experiences/feedback from using the product. Let me just make it clear though that no payment was received in exchange for this consumer review. 🙂

The NWZ-W273 or the Sony Walkman Sports Series is an MP3 device that comes with attached earbuds – thus eliminating the hassle of using an external earphone complete with the wired distractions.

The product comes in the below packaging with the following accessories:

(1) MP3/walkman device (2) USB charger (3) adjustment band (4) earbuds in various sizes (3) quick guides/user manuals in different languages, warranty card

Listed below are some of the product features as listed from the Sony website. Together with it are my opinion for each feature.

1. wearable and wire-free

vimage IMG_3251

This product has a simple and yet comfortable design. It saves one from the distraction of a wired earphone as the player already comes with a pair of earbuds, making it wire-free.  The flexible neckband can be bended according to your ear’s shape and does not irritate. The other accessories that comes from the package ensures comfort for the user – the varied earbuds sizes makes it possible for one to choose the best size that will provide a snug fit.  Another accessory is the adjustment band which one can use to adjust the size of the neckband to better fit the head. Lastly, the device weighs only 29g making it truly lightweight to wear.

2. storage capacity

It has 4 GB memory and 990 songs capacity, meaning it can endure long hours of training or any sports activity.

3. quick charge battery

The Sony Walkman comes with a USB charger with a cradle. It is simple to use – just attach the MP3 player into the USB cradle and plug the USB charger to any computer. A fully-charged battery provides 8-hours of battery life and what’s best, it has the quick-charge feature where a 3-minute charging provides 60 minutes of playback time. It is said to be the best feature for someone who isn’t techie enough to always remember to charge their electronic devices.

4. drag, drop and go

Populating music is very easy. Simply attach it again to a computer using the USB cradle/charger and then a user-friendly software interface allows the user to simply drag and drop music from Windows® Explorer in varied music formats: MP3, WMA, AAC or L-PCM music files. In addition, music can also be added from iTunes®, or Windows® Media Player.

5. song library navigation and button design

image image_1 image_2

The placement of the buttons were very practical and well-thought of. The location of these buttons on the earphones allow you to easily pause and play, adjust the volume, search the playlist and shuffle. There are tactile dots on the “Play” and “Volume up” buttons which makes one understand that the right buttons were pressed without even looking at it. But what makes it all the more comfortable is that one will hear a voice confirming the button press actions. There’s a “power lock switch” to prevent the device from being turned on accidentally, when carrying it in a bag or pocket.

6. high quality sound

According to the Sony website, the product uses Exclusive Sony® Clear Audio Technologies like Clear Stereo and Clear Bass which deliver deeper, richer sound quality.

The product has the signature SONY MUSIC QUALITY. Even though it doesn’t come with an preset equalizer (which hubby says will make the product even better), it blocks out surrounding noise/sound and can get you drowned from the music. This is both a benefit and a concern. Concern because when doing sports activities outdoors in busy streets or environment, one may fail to notice the goings-on.

7. waterproof

The product is designed to be waterproof up to 2 meters deep. I was not able to find time to use it for a swim but it was said that one must ensure a snug fit to the ears before using it for a swim to block off water. If water is not blocked, the music will be inaudible. The product has a limitation in such a way that it cannot be used in salt water as it has corrosive effects.

I LOVE IT. For such a small and lightweight device, it surely packs a punch in terms of features – from comfort, design, quality and ease of use is concerned. There aren’t so much negative things that I am able to find in it as the simple things that I look for a music-playing device have been satisfied.

If you are a runner or a biker like me, and always use a phone or any other MP3 device while on a run or ride, this might be a better option as you already have everything in one device and with a surely long battery life to boot – perfect for LSDs or century-rides!

And for those who give weight to product appearance, the NWZ-W273 comes in various colors –  black, blue, pink and white.

The 7-11 Run 800

Almost everyone have experienced running on the Skyway but has anybody ever tried running along CAVITEX? None yet, I bet! Here folks is one race that will make it possible for everyone to run a portion of the CAVITEX!  The 7-11 Run 800 – an event with an exciting race concept, a new race route and very good prize incentives for the would-be top finishers!

Read on the reasons why this race is a “must”  in my good friend Bards’ 7-11 Run 800 post at her BANANARUNNING blog  or see the exciting race amenities as posted in detail at the Pambansang Legs blog of another friend of mine, Eman . I could not have said it much better. 😉

Oh and here folks is the official press release:

ABOUT THE RACE. After Tour 700, the Philippines’ biggest bike race event held at the SCTEX last May 13, 2012, 7-Eleven now celebrates the opening of its 800th store with RUN 800 on August 26, 2012 along the CAVITEX, more known as the Coastal Road, with assembly at the Aseana City in Parañaque.

Runners joining the 10k,15k or 21k half-marathon will enjoy this course set along the coastal road – CAVITEX, wherein some of its lanes will be closed just for this race. Those joining in the 3k and 5k categories can look forward to an organized race course along Macapagal Ave. This is made possible with 7-Eleven’s system of allowing SELF-SELECTED WAVE STARTS, enabling them to run with people with the same skill or speed (or with friends!). To make this run more exciting, the top 3 per age category will receive medals. Top 3 Filipino males and females in the 21k will be sponsored to join the Macau International Marathon on December 2012.

Freedom Run 2010 by Greenhills Shopping Center and Sun Cellular opens registration

Received this via email. You folks might be interested in running a race with San Juan City as part of the route. Read on for the details. 🙂

June 13, 2010
Greenhills Shopping Center

Get set for Freedom Run 2010, a collaboration between Ortigas & Co.’s  Greenhills Shopping Center and Sun Cellular.  This happens on June 13, 2010, and is for the benefit of St. John the Baptist Educational and Scholarship Foundation in San Juan.
Over three thousand (3,000) people are expected to register for this run. “This would be our second year organizing a fun run in cooperation with Sun Cellular.  We saw a lot of families run together last year, and are expecting to see a lot more this year.  A lot of those who joined our run last year actually knew each other.  Beyond being a mere wellness event, the Freedom Run is seen to be a community event.  Do you know that aside from being known for value-shopping, Greenhills Shopping Center has actually been a venue for various wellness activities for many years now?  We have communities of people who run, walk, and bike around the Center.  There are also groups who do their aerobics and tai chi exercises every morning, rain or shine,” says Cathy Ko, General Manager of Ortigas & Co.’s Shopping Center Division.
She adds, “We at Ortigas & Co. work consciously plan our projects, whether they be office, residential, or retail, in such a way that they become an ideal environments for lifestyle and living”
The start and end point of the race is Greenhills Shopping Center, routes being within the vicinity of San Juan City.  Registration starts April 30 to May 29, 2010; interested parties may register at the V-Mall information Booth, Greenhills Shopping Center and Toby’s Glorietta 4, Makati City. Toby’s, Mall of Asia, Pasay and North EDSA are also registration points from April 30 – May 14.
“Last year’s youngest finisher was a five year-old kid, some adults might want to take on the challenge, too,” Ko added.
The trip distances and corresponding fees are: 3K (P450.00), 5K (P500.00), 10K (P550.00) and 21K (P600.00). After registration, race kits may be claimed from May 30 – June 6 at the Tiendesitas Tent Lobby, 12 NN to 8 PM . For those in the Greater Manila Area an additional P100.00 can be added for race kits to be delivered straight to your doorsteps.

9/9/9 Run

I have always believed that the number nine (9) is a lucky number. That’s why I have looked forward for the date 9/9/9 to come because deep inside I always felt like it will bring with it good luck three times over.

And so it was on Wednesday, Sept 9, 2009 (yep! 9/9/9). My first luck of the day was being able to get the nod to get out of the office earlier, enabling me to participate in the Heroes Run organized for the iamninoy runners. The Heroes Run, as it was called was a tribute run made to commemorate the 40th day since the death of former President and every Filipinos’ “Tita”, Corazon C. Aquino. Heroes run because the run route was along the Ayala Triangle in Makati which will make us run past three heroes’ monuments – that of Gabriela Silang, Pio del Pilar and Ninoy Aquino, Tita Cory’s martyr husband.

Next luck came not just for me but for the whole iamninoy runners group as well because the rain stopped and the sky almost cleared from around 4:30 p.m. until all were done running at 6:00 p.m. (some did run an almost infinite number of loops!).

and off we go!

Prior to the start of the run, each iamninoy runner was asked to write down/pledge the number of loops he/she is going to run, each loop measuring 1.2km. This gives us again the opportunity to be heroes in our own little way because for each loop that each of us complete, a P100 donation will be given by a corporate sponsor to the 57:75 Movement. So on that lucky triple nine date, over 30 runners ran a minimum of 3 to 5 loops each sharing the luck to a number of unknown public school children who will be beneficiaries of the 57:75 Movement’s cause.

Oh and it was, I believed not just luck but some sort of a miracle because you see, after the run, a heavy rainshower poured. Somebody just made sure that we will be able to complete our run before it rained again. Angaling!

Lastly, I was also lucky to have been able to attend the after-run get-together at Dencio’s Restaurant. I usually would not have been able to because it was a Wednesday and I have work early the next day. But then, I did and enjoyed it! (Tenk yo biri mats! Tenk yo biri mats! – Banggi, wahahaha!)

In hindsight, I remember my mom always telling me to capture special moments or days on cam. We have one for 8/8/8, I remember. And it gives me joy to see now that I have a lot of memorable 9/9/9 pictures which shows us doing something for a worthy cause.  🙂

Run #1 for 2009

While staying at my Mom-in-law’s place in QC for the new year, Art and I was able to squeeze in a 5.22 km run around the UP Acad oval on the afternoon of Jan. 1, 2009. It was a good run albeit a short one. We could have ran longer but silly me forgot to bring water for rehydration. But as luck still smiled at me, I was able to use my Nike+ Sportsband during this run enabling us to have an idea of the time, distance and pace we were able to cover.  😀

Hopefully, we’ll have more of these within the year well, aside from the scheduled trainings that is.

Happy New Year everyone!

P.S. :  My Nike+ Sportsband’s display returns to “garbage” after this run. Hay! 😆
