TIMEX Philippines Ambassadors Goes to New York for the ING New York Marathon 2013

On November 3, 2013 the streets of New York City will again be filled with cheer as about 47,000 participants, 2 Million spectators and a worldwide television audience of 315 million focus on what is said to be the largest one-day live sporting event in the world. the ING New York Marathon.

During the 26.2-mile journey through the five boroughs of New York City, some 47,000 runners will experience the sights and sounds of the city, cheered on by more than two million spectators, entertained by hundreds of bands, and be inspired every step of the way.

It is in regard that TIMEX Philippines held, a few days ago, a very-special “Timex Delegates send-off” for their Brand Ambassadors who will try to make history by participating in this special event.

Present in the send-off together with select members of the media were TIMEX Marketing team headed by Ms. Ivy Palencia,  and TIMEX Ambassadors Coach Rio dela Cruz and celebrity-couple and triathletes – Anthony and Maricel Pangilinan. All three are the TIMEX Philippines delegates to the said marathon event in New York except that Coach Rio’s entry will have to be withdrawn at the last minute due to some urgent concerns.

It was a fruitful and happy lunch time for everyone with all of us engaged in interesting talk about the New York Marathon – with both Coach Rio and Anthony sharing their past NYC Marathon experiences and Maricel sharing to us her feelings and thoughts for her upcoming first NYCM.

Here are some of the things that the 3 revealed to us:

1. Coach Rio

VK2J6120

  • The New York City Marathon is considered to be the biggest marathon in the world as it only has the full marathon distance as its event.
  • He says that for NYCM participants, clothing is very important and layered clothing is a must. Top layers should be the clothes that one is willing to just throw away as these level of clothing are being discarded along the route during the run.
  • Participants should be there early (at least 1.5 or 2 hours before) the race as one should find where his wave should start,
  • For marathon and in any other races, he doesn’t follow any special diet. He just follows his diet during training.
  • He eats BIG the night before the race because he do not eat breakfast on race day morning
  • 70 or 80% of the participants to the NYCM are non-New Yorkers
  • The NYCM route is more difficult than the Boston Marathon

2. Anthony Pangilinan

VK2J6069

  • Training and running for a marathon gives him license to eat anything he wants
  • Hydration and Nutrition can make or break one’s race
  • one should stick to their hydration and nutrition schedule
  • 2 Million people who are not runners are all lined-up along the route of the NYCM to cheer for participants
  • the NYCM is a very special day for New York, it is a whole day of celebration – streets are closed, bars all have bands playing and give free drinks for finishers, churches are open with their choirs singing
  • The discarded the clothes of the participants are being donated to charity making the NYCM one of the biggest charity event also.
  • Suggestion to participants:
    • draw energy from the crowd and let it take you half-way the race
    • write your name on the bib as the crowd will shout out your name as they cheer for you

3.  Maricel Laxa-Pangilinan

VK2J6006

  • is a vegetarian and believes that ever since she became one she doesn’t have any more problems with regards a diet
  • being a vegetarian though is not for everyone
  • There is a science which can effectively tell how many calories you should eat 2 hours before a race. formula is one’s weight in lbs x 2.2 = calories
  • Nutrition and timing when to hydrate is important as lack of any or both can deplete your energy
  • The NYCM is in every serious runner’s bucket list, to be included one has to be either a part of a charity or one has to join the lottery and pray to get picked
  • For the TIMEX ambassadors, slots where given by Timex US who is the official timing sponsor of the NYCM.
  • The NYCM is more newbie-friendly than the Boston Marathon which is for qualifiers. Some run for personal records, for a touring experience.

It was truly a noon well-spent with good conversation with good people. It left me to thinking, “I better get back to training soon and hopefully in the future get a chance to add the NYCM in my running bucket list too!

Here’s wishing Anthony and Maricel Pangilinan the best of luck and a wonderful time in the New York City Marathon. We look forward to hearing again wonderful NYCM stories from both of you when you get back!

Meanwhile, here is a treat to everyone of us from TIMEX. Read on!

He will be doing the bike leg of one of the time relay teams. After this, he will be at the Ayala Terraces to have a Meet N Greet in connection to the upcoming RunRio race, 2012 TIMEX RUN – CEBU race.

Of course I will be there! So if any of you is in Cebu this weekend, particularly this Sunday, you can catch Piolo doing his full IM70.3 at the Shangri-la Mactan or at the Meet N Greet at Ayala Terraces. Below are the mechanics on how you can join the Meet N Greet. Read on!

I Lap You!

As  I prepare to finally get back to running training , I have decided to forego with the use of my GPS-enabled watch for now. I instead found (more like received!) a watch that will work well for me during my back-to-running-as-a-newbie-training. One that is sleek and simple to use. It isn’t a watch with all the features that one may need in all running conditions though – since it doesn’t measure the pace and distance ran. And oh, it also doesn’t come with a heart rate monitor. Presenting, the newest addition to my sports watch collection:  😉

TIMEX IRONMAN TRIATHLON 50 LAP Mid-Size Watch T5K500

Why do I like it?

The watch will work best when I am doing my training at a venue where distance is already measured, like the ULTRA or the BHS loop. In these cases, I only have the need to measure my lap times and total run time, which is among the watch’s key features. Simple, no fuss and easy to use for someone who is a technical dud (that’s me! I just don’t enjoy reading technical manuals!) 😉

Best of all, it is just the right size for my wrist! Not too big, as other sports watches are and also not too small. For a person with a small wrist such as I, this mid-sized watch is just perfect. I can even wear it anytime with my casual clothes! 😉

perfect fit! 🙂

Oh and have I also told you that this watch is not only good for newbie runners? Yep, yep, yep! This Timex Ironman Triathlon 50-Lap Mid-Size Watch T5K500 is good for those who are new to swimming, cycling or a combination of these three disciplines – triathlon!

Any newbie runner or triathlete or any sportsman need not invest in a more expensive sports watch as one’s essential needs (be it in triathlon, running, swimming or cycling) will perfectly be addressed by this watch. Here are the basic features as I gathered from http://www.outdoorgb.com/run.asp:

  • Silicone strap
  • 100-m water resistance
  • Quartz movement
  • Stainless steel and resin case
  • Chronograph – the manual says that the Chronograph training log stores workouts by date, with best lap, average lap and total segment time (hmm…)
  • Date
  • Alarm – never miss any race or training schedules as this watch has three customizable options: daily/weekday/weekly
  • Indiglo illumination – night mode is a must watch feature as runs usually happens either very early in the morning or at night.

For newbie runners/triathletes out there, this watch will surely last you until such time when you will want to experience training with a GPS-enabled watch, effectively check your pace and heart rate and download your training data into a computer for analysis. For me, this watch will certainly be my buddy as I get through my “newbie-again” running phase.

NOTE: The Timex Ironman Triathlon 50-Lap Mid-Size Watch T5K500 is locally available in Timex Concept Stores nationwide, select running and sports shops  and via online through Outdoor GB , visit them at http://www.outdoorgb.com.
