Anybody Want A THORLOS?

I have been into running since my “fitness awakening” in the year 2005. Through the years, as I get to love this sport more, I have accumulated a lot of learning gathered from mentors, coaches, friends, reading materials and most importantly, actual experiences.

One of those important learnings that I have always kept in mind is that a runner’s performance/comfort not only lies on choosing a good pair of shoes but also in choosing a perfect pair of socks to use with the shoes. The socks after all is the main item which gets into contact with our feet. With a poor sock-selection, blisters are a big possibility together with sweaty, smelling feet that more often than not leads to smelly feet.

When I received an invite for the Thorlo socks launch, I have thought that ah, finally I will get to know more about this premium socks brand and have an appreciation why it is priced higher than the common running-specific socks brand. And these are bits and pieces of what I learned from the launch:

  • it is an American brand of customized and scientifically structured socks for individual sports used by top athletes (Thorlo has a line of socks for other sports such as basketball, tennis, golf, hiking, mountaineering, and many more!)
  • as a support and recognition of the health and benefits that running brings to people, the brand has developed an extensive line of socks specifically designed to cater to runner’s needs
  • Thorlos is the one of the very few global pure socks brands in the Philippines, others are locally produced while other brands offer socks as side products only
  • Thorlos emphasizes education on the importance of FOOT-SHOE-SOCKS-FIT experience to draw maximum benefits, protection and comfort
  • is one of the few sports brands backed up by well-explained science and recipient of numerous awards and endorsements by scientific institutions, medical societies and athletic groups (Thorlo is the first line of socks to be granted the Seal of Acceptance by the American Podiatric Medical Association)
  • Thorlos socks cannot be faked and each and every pair was made using patented machines, yarns (particularly THOR-LON) and designs. No outsourcing was done hence all Thorlos socks around the world were made thru the strictest quality control of the company in North Carolina, USA
  • used to hearing shoes providing cushioning? Hey, Thorlo socks also provides cushioning through its unique Impact Zone feature which is said to lower dynamic impact at the heels.
  • are made up of different fibers that are meant to provide moisture management, softness, durability, temperature control, resiliency/protection and microbial control.
And here are some of their socks collection made specific for running:

These socks may be at bit pricey but if you are one for comfort, protection and durability, a Thorlo socks purchase may after all be a sound investment for you. We were told that these line of socks last for as long as 10 to 20 years!

Personally, I have yet to try my THORLO Thin Cushion pair that was provided to us with compliments during the launch but I was also particularly pretty interested in getting that EXPERIA model which I always see whenever I go to Riovana for a visit. I might probably purchase and try that one out first as it is said to be the premium model for running.

As I prepare to try on a pair, I with the support of Colerosh Incorporated – exclusive distributor of Thorlo socks here in the Philippines, will be giving out THREE PAIRS OF THORLO SOCKS to three lucky runners of this blog so that they too can join me in my “discovery” of the Thorlo brand of socks. So here’s the deal:

1. Kulitrunner will be giving out ONE PAIR OF THORLO SOCKS to three runners who happen to have read this blog, via a raffle.
2. To be eligible, you need to:

  • Like the Official Thorlos Philippines FB Page –
  • Answer this question correctly: “What are the 7 elements that Thorlo socks help protect you against?”
  • Liking the Thorlo Philippines FB Page is crucial as the answer to this question can be seen somewhere within the page. (HINT: photo albums)
  • Post your answer as a comment to this post. ONE PERSON, ONE ENTRY ONLY.
  • With your answer, kindly provide your full name and shoe size.
  • All entries with the correct answer will be raffled-off to determine the three lucky winners.
  • Entries will be accepted until 8PM of  Wednesday, May 2. Entries posted beyond this time will be disqualified.
  • Winners will be announced on or before May 2 and will be notified via email on how they can claim their prize.
THORLO Socks are locally available in around 21 stores within Metro Manila:

Run For A Scholar

I rarely endorse races which aren’t organized by groups that I am comfortable with. But there is this one race which aims to gather enough funds to be able to send underprivileged children to school. I am a mom to kids still in-school (and yet to be in school!) and I know that every parent would want their kids to gain formal education but not most parents are lucky to have the means to do so.

I was with regret that I have not been able to attend this event’s formal launch but from the materials I have been provided with and from the feedback from my other blogger friends, this race that is being presented by The American Chamber Foundation Philippines, Inc. and Chevron Philippines is one deserving of my hard-earned money. Yes, I will register for this race not only because it has a friendly-rate but because I know that regardless of how this race is to be organized or how the conduct of this race will fare with other big races, I know in my heart that my simple act of registering and paying for this race will help send one child to school and eventually, possibly help shape his/her future.

I hope you will do too! Race details below. 😉

Alaska Milk sponsors Team Bike Boutique

Watch out for this new young breed of triathletes! Read on for the press release below: 🙂

With the goal of not only supporting the sport of triathlon but also helping promising young, local athletes develop into world class professionals Alaska Milk Corporation has become the title sponsor of Team Bike Boutique which shall be named Alaska Team TBB.

Alaska Team TBB is composed of 10 members of four foreign professionals and six promising local athletes.

The team will compete in all major races in the Philippines (Ironman 5i50 Subic Bay, 70.3 Cebu). They will also carry the Alaska brand in major races in Asia and International races which include the Ironman Asia Pacific Championship in Melbourne, European Ironman Championship in Frankfurt and the World Championship in Kona, Hawaii.

“We are very pleased to have top foreign athletes like Caroline Steffen, Ali Fitch, Matt O’Halloran and David Dellow,” said Uytengsu. “But we also want to augment this with promising young Filipino athletes that will hopefully be able to represent the country in international competitions in the near future. Obviously, having a top caliber coach in Brett Sutton helps make this goal a real possibility.”

Uytengsu added that Alaska Team TBB’s professional athletes will not only race for the team but also act as role models to improve the lives of people around the world by providing hope and opportunity through sport.

The Alaska Team TBB pros include Caroline Steffen, David Dellow, Ali Fitch and Mathieu O’Halloran.

Steffen is a 33-year old professional triathlete from Switzerland. She stands at 178 cm and weighs 65 kg. After going pro in 2009, she won 2nd place at the 2010 Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii and won the top spot at 2012 ITU Long Distance Triathlon World Championship.

Dellow is a 32-year-old Australian triathlete. This 6’2” tall man has been a pro since 2002. He has participated eight times in the World Cup and has run over 100 races around the world. He was also included in the Australian Elite World Champion team in 2007 and 2008.

Fitch is an Australian professional triathlete standing at 169cm and weighing 58kgs. This 39-year-old woman has been a pro since 2005. She has had several victories in major races including placing second in 2007 Ironman Malaysia  and 2008 Ironman Canada, and winning 1st place at the 2008 Coeur d’Alene Olympic.

The 26-year-old O’Halloran is a professional triathlete from Canada. He has been a pro since 2007 and has participated in more than 100 races around the world. He represented Canada in three World Championships. Recently, he won 1st place in the Zambales Beach Games Triathlon and 1st Place in Bantayan Beach Games Triathlon.

But more than just winning races the Alaska Team TBB program hopes to develop a generation of Filipino champions in the sport of triathlon. This will be accomplished through an athlete development program. Filipino scholarship athletes will be provided spots in the team so that they follow in the footsteps of the team’s pro athletes.

“Alaska Milk has had a long history of supporting sports including the Alaska Aces professional basketball team in the PBA, the Alaska Cup (the single largest youth football tournament in the Philippines), Jr NBA, the Alaska Power Camp which provides instruction for youth basketball and youth football and is the title sponsor for Alaska Ironkids.

Alaska Milk Corporation cares and nurtures through its sports development programs and inculcates in children the values of teamwork, discipline, determination, integrity and sportsmanship.

“The opportunity to be the title sponsor for Alaska Team TBB Philippines professional triathlon team is a natural progression as Alaska Milk extends its support to triathlon and the development of the sport and promising triathletes in the country,” said Uytengsu

The Century Tuna 5i50 Triathlon Series

Last week Sunrise Events held its posh joint launch for the Century Tuna 5i50 Triathlon Series (aptly named after the total distance of the said triathlon race) and the for Alaska’s first ever sponsored Triathlon Team – the Alaska Team TBB (featured on a separate post).

I was invited and attended the launch NOT in my capacity as a blogger (did not receive an invite from the PR Team) but as a friend of Sunrise Events’ Project Director (I am touched btw P!). According to her, this is one of their posh launches that I should not miss. 😛

The 5i50 Triahlon Series launched was one learning experience for me. Learned that:

  • the 5i50 Triathlon Series is an international racing event was started by the same owners of the Ironman Series – the World Triathlon Corporation (WTC).
  • this race brand is considered as the world’s largest international distance triathlon series
  • it was named as 5i50 based on this race’s total distance: 1.5km swim + 40km bike + 10k run

This year, Sunrise Events will be bringing the first ever 5i50 Triathlon Series with Century Tuna, the Philippines’ number one tuna brand, on June 24 at the Subic Bay, Philippines.

I am no triathlete (at my age, I still do not know how to swim!), but judging from the facts presented and just by seeing the entities that will join together to mount this event will leave each and every triathlete – budding newbies, experienced, competitive and even non-triathletes like me breathtakingly-excited. I will definitely be there to witness how the event will go. 😉

Meanwhile, let me share to you some tidbits of info that I was able to get from the launch (press release, calendar of activities, route map). Before I go, I wish each and every participant good luck and a whole lot of challenge and fun! 😉

Sunrise Events Inc. brings Century Tuna at Subic Bay

Philippine hospitality, ingenuity and its unbelievably beautiful scenery will once again be showcased before the world when Alaska Milk stages the Olympic-distance Century Tuna 5i50 Triathlon Series Philippines on June 24 at scenic Subic Bay.

Alaska Milk Corporation (AMC) President and CEO Fred Uytengsu, through Sunrise Events, Inc. (SEI), introduces the Olympic-distance triathlon race (1.5k swim, 40k bike, 10k run) to local shores. This is the first 5i50 distance triathlon sanctioned by the World Triathlon Corporation (WTC) to be held in Southeast Asia.

“Our aim with this event is to encourage even more people to adopt a healthy lifestyle and embrace multisport training and racing. While we recognize that people may have an Ironman or Ironman 70.3 event as a ‘bucket list’ item, we also realize that you need to start somewhere and this event does exactly that. The distance is challenging for the novice triathlete and we hope to encourage many individuals to start with this distance,” said Uytengsu.

The two-time Ford Ironman World Championship finisher said he hopes to attract more participants in the sport by staging this shorter distance as well as holding relays with separate participants in the swim, bike and run legs of the race.

“We will have several categories in the relay division. We believe that by offering relays, we will end up getting full-fledged triathletes from this group as these participants will discover the joy and challenge of completing all three disciplines,” said Uytengsu.

The entire race will be within the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA), a former US Naval base and one of two former major military bases of the United States in the Philippines.

“We are pleased that Subic Bay has agreed to be our host venue for 2012 until 2014. Although Subic Bay has been host to many multi sport events, we will make it our challenge to make the 5i50 another world class production,” said Uytengsu.

Participating triathletes can say they have swum in majestic Subic Bay where mighty battleships were once moored surrounded by breathtaking mountains.

These mountains too will pose another daunting challenge during the bike leg which will feature some vicious climbs.

And like the other run legs in triathlons run in the Philippine, the 10k run route will be lined with spectators, giving the athletes that extra boost from cheering crowds that will help them complete the 51.5 kilometer distance.

Title sponsor is Century Tuna, the leading tuna brand in the Philippines. Other sponsors are Alaska Milk, 2XU, David’s Salon, Gatorade, Intercare, Oakley, Timex, Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority and media partners Philippine Star and Multisport Magazine.
